Punta Arenas, Chile

Punta Arenas, largest city and capital of the Magallanes, one of 13 districts of Chile, is located on the 300-mile Strait of Magellan which passes between the mainland of South America and Tierra del Fuego and hundreds of smaller islands. Before the Panama Canal opened, Punta Arenas was a coaling station for ships rounding Cape Horn.

Jane and Ed visited the nearby penguin colony and later walked around town and toured a museum.

Jane and Ed stopped for a friendly chat with some of the Punta Arenas police and their dog.

These boys, in the entrance to their school, were pleased to pose for a photo. Thin streaks across the picture were caused by light rain.

Punta Arenas has an internet café, as do most communities we visited.
