Valpariso, Chile

Valpariso, the port city for Santiago, is built on a narrow ledge by the sea and continues up the surrounding mountains. The steep streets are augmented by approximately 15 funicular railways. An adjacent town is Vińa del Mar with broad beaches and a tourist attitude. A five-mile commuter railway connects the two towns.

This is the funicular railway we rode to the top. In Valpariso, such devices are called “ascensors.”

Throughout Chile we noticed parks are watered by hand rather than by sprinklers.

This was our first view of the Crystal Symphony.

This was our view after riding a funicular to the top of a hill.

Articulated trolley buses operate in Valpariso.
